Larry Young
Young left the Burger King parking lot to purchase some beer at a nearby liquor store.  As he left the liquor store Redd Coles started hassling Young for his beer.  Young refused to give into Redd's demand.  This angered Redd and caused him to become more agitated.  Young walked away but Redd pursued him.  By the time Young and Redd reached the edge of the parking lot, Davis and Collins - who took a different route - were in the vicinity, but neither spoke to Young or joined Redd in his attempt to get Young's beer.

It was then that Redd threatened to shoot Young.  "You don't know me.  I'll shoot you."  Within seconds, Young was pistol whipped.  He sustained an open head wound and was bleeding profusely.  He was disoriented and in great pain.  Young made his way to the Burger King drive-thru window and tried to get assistance from the Burger King employees and a group of men in a van parked at the take out window.

Immediately,
Officer Mark MacPhail entered the parking lot from the area behind the van.  Everyone ran except the gunman.  MacPhail was shot dead.

Young identified Redd as the instigator and the man who threatened to shoot him.  Later that night at the police station he could not be sure who hit him because "everything happened so fast."  Young did NOT identified Davis as the shooter at trial.
