As bizarre as this last year has been, the reality is we live in a country where innocence should matter. As long as we believe that then we have no other option but to try harder. Here are some things you can do in no particular order.
1) Join our Innocence Matters group to get updates on progress and strategy during these critical days.
2) Write to Rainbow Medical Association, the folks whose job it is to kill Troy, and implore them to refuse to participate in this state-sanctioned murder. Details here.
3) Write an op-ed wherever you can get it published. One aspect of the case that needs more attention in the press is the unreliability of the evidence used to convict Troy. See Knowingly Killing an Innocent Man for case details discussing the implausibility of the trial testimony. Consider the poignant words of this young man in his Open Letter to Troy Davis Following the Supreme Court Decision.
4) Sign the Innocence Matters Petition.
5) Reach out to any media contacts you have and see if you can find folks willing to televise a panel discussion of experts to discuss the unreliability of the trial evidence. If you get any promising leads, please contact me at deirdre@innocencematters.us to coordinate scheduling with the prospective panelists.
6) Don't miss an opportunity to educate your friends, business associates, and bill collectors about Troy's case. Follow the lead of one concerned attorney who changed his outgoing message at his law firm to educate callers about Troy Davis. He gives a short description of the case and refers callers to a website for updates.
Sample message: "The United States Supreme Court's refusal to hear Troy Davis' compelling evidence of innocence has cleared the way for Georgia to execute him on October 27, 2008 without any court ever examining whether Troy was convicted based on perjured testimony. To learn more about this case and how you can help to save an innocent man, please visit http://freetroydavis.com. Thank you."
7) Write a reply to Lawton's ridiculous op-ed in which he distorts the facts of this case in a number of respects - posted on this site on a page called Spencer Lawton: A Man with No Apparent Attachment to the Truth. At that page you will find a sample reply and link to the story so that you can post your reply.
8) Please sign the petition to the Board of Pardons and Paroles to reconsider clemency based on the unreliability of the trial evidence. If you will not be attending one of the local events and have not already received a copy of the petition, please email me at deirdre@innocencematters.us.
9) If you are in the Atlanta area, join the Emory Candler students on Wednesday, October 22nd any time between 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Emory's main campus for Wonderful Wednesday. Their tables will be set up in Asbury Circle, located between the Dobbs University Center and the Woodruff PE center. They will be speaking about Troy Davis' case and distributing information. You will have an opportunity to sign the new petition seeking clemency.
10) Attend the Innocence Matters rally for Troy Davis Thursday, October 23rd, at the Georgia State Capitol front steps (downtown Atlanta) from 6p.m-8p.m.. We expect this to be a large rally. Rev. Al Sharpton and Amnesty International's director Larry Cox will be speaking there. Please come and represent Georgians opposed to the execution of Troy Davis! If you live outside of Georgia, please plan a similar event in your city for the 23rd .
11) There will be two Interfaith Prayer Vigils For Troy Davis held on Friday, October 24th at 12 Noon and 8:00 PM. These vigils will be on Emory's campus in the Cannon Chapel. Here is a link to an interactive map of the campus: http://map.emory.edu/
Please know that we continue to work very hard on this and expect to come up with more ideas in the next few days.
Thank you, Deirdre
